This Took Thirty Seconds [EDIT]

The back story here is that I am traveling -- news at eleven -- and this safe I fasten down to the plate seen in the background and keep a handgun with me when we’re camping in campgrounds. On this trip, this safe decided to crap its electronic combination and the contents became inaccessible to me, for thirty seconds plus the time it took to buy a new pry bar from Home Depot. At the time I bought this, ten years ago or more, it was the only one available at the moment and I’ve never been all that wild about it. But it’s always fastened down or chained in place so you can’t simply grab it and run. Gun safe shopping today.

At least it’ll help stop curious kids.  That’s better than nothing.

Lol with that safe I’m surprised it took more than a hard drop

That’s pretty impressive to assemble a weapon, box, and safe in 30 seconds.

They should let you try to break into it before you buy.

I had one of those keypad safes. Battery died. Couldn’t find key and needed to get into it fast. Like you, it took me 5 seconds to pry open soda can thick door of a safe. Sad really

A bigger pry bar and you can cut that time in half!

Locks are for keeping honest people honest.

...well... that and lazy potential criminals. Anyone who really wants into something will get in regardless.

Flat pry bars are the best!

Oh. Is that not the subject?

Well, better a crappy locked box than nothing I guess.

But not curious kids with crowbars.

I was a curious kid with easy access to a crowbar.

Then again, I was also a curious kid with an angle grinder so the locked safe I got while collecting scrap metal was no match regardless. Empty, sadly.

For home use, that’s the biggest part of the equation. For portable use, when you’re on the road and it decides to crap its electronic combination, it’s time to get a new one.

AMSEC or Liberty is a decent place to start.

I keep a padlock on the side gate to my backyard. I figure if a bad guy really wanted to get in they could do so fairly easily. But the lock might be just enough to encourage them to try my neighbor’s backyard instead.

Both places make good portable use safes like what you have that can fasten or cable lock. Plenty of truck vaults or console vaults out there too from other places, if that’s more your need.

I was a curious kid with access to a lot of tools, but I also had parents that wouldn’t stand for unnecessary or unapproved destruction.

exactly why I keep a cheap but beefy looking Masterlock (which I know isnt a very good lock) on my shed.

There’s a few hundred bucks of lawn equipment I’d rather not lose to a junky looking for a quick pawn and there are other unlocked sheds around the neighborhood.

I’m not a big ‘firearms for protection’ guy (I don’t disagree with it, just something I don’t personally feel I need right now in my current living situation), but I don’t like the idea of camping without a firearm, especially backwoods. It’s not the animals I’m worried about either. Kudos to you for being responsible (imo)  and keeping stuff under lock and key.

I kept mine locked with a breech lock. Figured the plastic handles or thin sheet metal would break well before any lock I decided to put on there, not worth using a good one.
